Eleanor Roosevelt
I am Eleanor Anna Roosevelt, the 32nd First Lady of the United States. I was born on October 11, 1884 in New York City. I was raised with unhappy parents. My mother was always criticizing me and saying that I wasn't good enough. She even called me "Granny" because I was so solemn and timid. My father was very loving but always getting disappointed in me. He was an alcoholic and when I was 7 he had to leave our family to sort out his life. A year later my mother caught Diphtheria and died and when I was 10 my father died of a drunken fall. So, we had to stay with our Grandmother Hall. Grandmother Hall was a very strict and old-fashioned lady. She didn't know what was in style for people my age at that point in time, so she always picked out-of-date clothes for me to wear. Since people made fun of my clothes and me, I became even more fearful and timid. We decided that it would be a good idea for me to have a good education, so I was sent to another mother's home to learn the basics like math, reading and house manners. When I turned 15 and I had completed all of the lessons in that school I still wanted to continue my education, so I was sent to a boarding school in England.
I continued my daily newspaper columns and started 2 radio shows to elevate people's spirits. I even began a weekly television interview show to let the nation know who their leaders were, later I had the shows translated into French, German, Italian, and Spanish. When Franklin was elected to the state senate in New York, we moved to Albany and in 1912 I attended the state Democratic Party for the first time. But, once again, we moved in 1913 when Franklin was appointed Secretary of the Navy. That is when we hired Lucy Mercer. That same year, WW1 broke out in Europe. My Grandmother Hall died a happy death of old age in 1919. Two years later, in 1921, Franklin got Polio and was paralyzed. Everyone knew about it because he couldn't do his job and he had to go through a ton of special treatments to try and make his legs get better, but they didn't help very much. So, in the end, Franklin returned to his public life, but not fully.
