A. The journalist E.V Hornbeck describes the trial as the “persecution of the educated.” What do you think he meant by the statement? Do you agree or disagree?The Evolution Statues were an attempt by the religious communities within the State of Tennessee to control free thought. Hornbeck’s comment was referring to the masses of religious citizens (the persecutors) who rejected any scientific truths and condemned anyone that pursued science (the educated). Many of these citizens (residing within the Bible belt of America) were farmers and laborers and were generally uneducated, thus did not understand what evolution was. I agree with the statement. This law was enacted to prevent any other form of thinking about the origins of man. It has been my experience that uneducated people, or people ignorant of certain facts
