Interp Essay

Every short story teaches a person what it is about and how it relates to real life. This is the definition of a theme which is mainly the subject of the text in the story. The idea of each story is to educate the reader more about life and what the dangers are to be aware of. It states arguments out in tiny tales which makes sense to the reader. A short story author, Kate Chopin, demonstrates how the subject matter relates to real life throughout her novellas. A couple of her stories are "The Story of An Hour", "The Locket" and "A Pair of Silk Stockings". All the stories she wrote made sense to the outside world for the reader to understand what the awareness of life is.

A woman thought that her husband was dead because he didn't come home on time. Many wives fear this after a couple of weeks or months of marriage. This theme is illustrated in "The Story of An Hour". In this story, a man enters a woman's house and tells her that her husband (his brother) died in an accident. The woman gets really frightened and abruptly her husband shows up, so she gets shocked and quickly falls to the ground and dies. The quote "She had died of a heart disease - of joy that kills"(4), shows that the woman got over excited that she

This brings us to another selection of the works she did. "The Locket" talks about a man who was with a bunch of people sitting on a hillside. Chopin made this story that the reader doesn't know what is going on in the beginning and making you think that the character, Edmond, was with a couple of friends or so. But that is not true since the quote "The hillside was alive with clatter and motion; with sudden up-springing lights among the pines"(2) implies. This gets into the conscience of the mind and makes you think opposite. He is in a war and not with a couple of friends chatting freely on a hill. This story ends with tragedy as this character dies while he is looking at the beautiful sky, which shows him and his love dancing cheerfully. The main object, or symbol, in this story was a type of jewelry, a thing called a locket. This object was given to him before he went to war by his love, in which he has a memory of her putting it around his neck. This resembled both of them as one and being together forever. But it wasn't till long when the enemy came up and wiped this tiny army out. His girlfriend knew what happened later on and gets really sad and whished he comes back. When she was able to see his dead body the author writes "She gazed at him with eyes that were full of supplication and a certain terror of joy"(5). This is a type of quote that was also in her story "The Story of An Hour" with a certain type of joy that is not pleasure. This quote can mean that she was a bit confused about herself. She didn't know what was right from wrong. She was afraid of having happiness within her of his passing away. This also could means that she was afraid of contentment which would make her life
