Professional Issues in Information Technology
Professional Issues in Information TechnologyDon't they say "first impressions last" ... well, here's my first impression on: 1. the relevance of this subject to my course and; So where do I start - well how about I start with you because once I've made my first impression on you, based on my first impressions about this subject, then I can justify the second point. It seems clear to me that I am supposed to be writing not based on what I don't know but on what I do know. Well that's easy, not a great deal, so I will be completely honest and say I haven't researched any of the content in this essay and it is only based on my own understanding. So here are the key words you've given me to trigger some potential ideas in my head (a) 'ethics', (b) 'computer ethics', (c) 'professional ethics'. My initial thought is 'shit' however I can't say that! But why not? I'm only expressing the way I feel ... is that right or wrong? a) Hang on, is that ethics? Well this must be a fairly new area of ethics because I don't recall reading about this in any of Aristotle's famous papers! Well what do everyone and I use computers for these days - word processing, email, banking, file sharing, web surfing, multimedia and wow, quite a lot! That is indeed a lot of information floating around and I'm guessing quite a bit could be considered private. So if there is so much information available to us via computers there must be some ethical issues no doubt. 'private', hey that reminds me of intellectual property which in definition (I believe) represents the property of your mind or intellect. Well, there is a heap of that on the Internet and I for one have plenty of it and I haven't paid anything apart from my Internet fees. Am I doing the wrong thing? Well I guess that all depends on what you're using the information for and/or what you are doing with that information. From a Law perspective, this is certainly a fairly new area and a key example I can think of is the issue relating to file sharing and in particular, music sharing through web facilitators such as Napster, Kazza, Aud
