The Brave New World speaks of a world where material comfort and physical pleasure are the only concerns, where humans are not born but created and conditioned according a strict caste system developed by society. Imagine a culture where the concept of family is non-existent and the idea of aging, giving natural births and dying are their worse horror. How unrealistic one might think, yet so relevant to today's notion of utopia. Who wouldn't like to live in such a world, where happiness and comfort is only a pill away?

We get a headache; we take a Tylenol, to make the pain go away, right? If we're depressed we get ourselves a prescription of Prozac. Any pain that can be prevented or eliminated, more than likely we have a cure for. Now how is this any different from "soma" in the Brave New World?
The idea that such a society can actually exist is frightening, yet at the rate that our technology and science is advancing, it's essentially conceivable. We now have the tools and knowledge that make cloning possible. Who knows what boundaries we will reach in a couple of years? When the book was written none of these concepts were possible because our technology was not as sophisticated as it is today, but in this time with every new discovery we are more and more able to control our every actions.
