Africa
Africa is a country well known for its natural resources and the thirst the west has had for these resources. Some of these resources include diamonds and chromioum, gold, cobalt, uranium, phosphates, platinum, coal, petroleum, natural gas, iron ore and land. It also has bauxite, nickel, manganese, copper, cocoa, coffee, palm oil and wild life. Unfortunately the world has known about Africa's natural resources for centuries, which has led to a plumage of Africa's vast resources without just compensation for Africa's societies. Such actions have led to vastly low GDP's for the majority of African countries. Most African countries have had a problem with direct colonization and imperialism. Such elements destroyed historical forms of government, which African's already instituted prior to the precursor. Before the Europeans arrived Africans had their own bartering system utilizing gold dust, salt and cowree shells. African's had their own system of supply and demand which were influenced by necessity, time of day, scarcity, quality of product and consumer's relationship with the sel
Unfortunately the poor are preyed upon to make the wealthy wealthier. False taxes are instituted; orthodox laws are passed mandating that citizens have passes and police officers utilize extreme measures to police people. The militaristic measures of these societies are to institute the dictator's marshal law and in order to keep the ordinary citizens from forming a coup to oust their government or try to gain back control of their natural resources. Some recent problems De Beers have been having recently have been with Tiffany & Co making deals directly with miners bypassing De Beers and inscribing the Tiffany & Co. motto on their on diamonds. Australian and Russian mines that De Beers once had control of are selling their diamonds to other external distributors besides De Beers. The negative side of the diamonds is the "blood diamonds" they are selling. The money made from drilling the diamond mines have gone into buying guns and supporting the rebel groups in countries such as Congo and Angola. The rebels use the guns to fight over control of the diamond mines. Such diamonds are called conflict diamonds. The world has put pressure on the De Beers to not sell such diamonds but unfortunately some of the blood diamonds can be brought into African country and sold. It is difficult to detect such diamonds. Today, the Zairians deal with an Israeli diamond company, Dan Gertler Diamonds, giving the company exclusive rights to buy their production. The contract, giving Dan Gertler Diamonds rights to a potential diamond flow of 600 million dollars a year, has led to a significant decrease in official diamond exports. De Beers' control over the diamond mines has decreased significantly yet despite the minor improvements Zaire has yet to see its economy rebound.
