Negative Aspects of Chat Communication

If I cited some lines from any chat room conversation, it would look like an extract from an absurd play of some new modern writer. But actually, participants of such conversations are not only real, but also mostly normal people. Thus, chat is an online communication with different people in real time. To log in to any chat room a person should have a nickname (screen name, or "nick") and a password. Some chats require additional registration information, for others having a screen name is enough. Then the procedure is very simple: pick up a name or names you want to address to and type your messages.

Though it is very interesting and exciting to meet different people via chat rooms, people should realize the possible negative aspects, and even danger, of such communication. It can be false identity, misunderstanding, addiction, etc.

The main drawback of chat communication is that people cannot see each other and don't actually know each other. Due to chat anonymity, a lot of chat participants play with their identity. For example, a man talking with a teenage girl may pretend to be of the same age as she is, and easily get into her mind thanks to his experience. God knows what might happen then. For kids communication in chat

To avoid any danger and possible disappointments, people should always remember that online participants are not always sincere. Of course, not everyone has bad intentions, but personal safety should be a prime consideration, common sense is very important in such situations, especially if you decide to develop you relationships with virtual friend and meet him in real life. "The end decision is yours," says criminologist Wayne Petherick, "but you have to ask yourself whether you truly know the person. And while they might seem all right online, can you guarantee they might be all right when you meet them?"

People, who excessively use chats, may have medical problems as well, because they don't move much and impair their eye vision.

Parents should also teach their children some simple rules to behave online and make sure their kids follow them (such as, not to tell anybody their real name, not to give anybody their phone number, never agree to meet anyone in person). Close relationships between parents and their children help very much in such cases.

Another negative factor of chats is misunderstanding. When you talk to people in real life, you hear their voices and intonations; you have eye contact and other non-verbal aspects of communication. All these help us to understand people more clearly. Virtual communication does not have these advantages. Everybody interprets words of other person in his own way.
