Autery Museum of Western Heritage
For my history museum project, I went to visit the Autry Museum of Western Heritage. This museum is located near the L.A. Zoo at 4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles, California, 90027. It is open Tuesday through Sunday ten a.m. to five p.m. The general topic for the museum is the history of North America. The exhibit focuses on the colonies and cities that were created when New Spain was discovered. The main time frame of the museum was from the 1850's to early 1900's. The museum is about the North American continent. The museum is about the different people that traveled to America and how they settled into the new land. Even though, the subject was about all people that came to America, it was mainly focused on the Jewish settlers. Yet there were also some galleries that were focused on the Chinese and Mexicans. I was surprised to find that there was very little pertaining to the Native Americans. I really enjoyed some of the interesting ways that the museum tried to connect with the people. For example, outside of the museum there was a trail that was similar to what the pioneers had to go through to find new land. It was very interesting also because there was a wagon that we could actually sit on.
The museum also touched on the different cities of America. An example is Seattle. It talked about the Northwestern Jews and how they formed politics and business in the 1850s. One company was named the Western Fish and Oyster Company. Another was the Pike Place Market. There were many pictures throughout the museum. An exhibit was contributed to the theatre that was created after people had settled. There was a picture at Los Angeles of a play company called the Jessie L. Lasky Feature with Americans and Indians. There was another picture of the overland wagon train in 1875. A picture of different homes to Jewish people in San Francisco showed a before and after picture of the earthquake that occurred in 1906. The museum says that it is very significant because it was built wit ha $54 million gift from the Autry Foundation, the museum is a distinctive, world-class center. It is the only museum to so broadly span the West's temporal, geographic and artistic scope. Its collection of significant, artistic and historical Western firearms is the finest in the country. The exhibits are linked to today's American culture and society because we are living where the history actually occurred. Fortunately, there are museums that help us society remember and learn about our
