Hester Prynn was strong. She was strong enough to board a strange ship sailing to a new world. She was strong enough to actually be hopeful, to really believe in a chance. That, in my own opinion, is a rare thing indeed.

They seem almost chained at the neck by the local laws and strict religious tradition, which was brought from England. All the men and women seem to know their exact place and function in society, and seem very comfortable in their organized daily routines. While reading this book, one can notice a very ironic and odd comparison between the men of the story and the women. Chillingworth and Dimmsdale both have a secret that they keep, and both have something very personal that ales them. Dimmsdale suffers from the guilt he shares for Hester, and Chillingworth destroys himself for the revenge that he hopes to find. Through the story, the reader watches as both men physically deteriorate into weak and dying men. Hester and Pearl , on the other hand, do the exact opposite. As the men of the story become weaker and weaker physically, the women grow stronger and stronger both physically and mentally. The men are so obsessed with their different emotions that it actually begins to kill them. On opposite ends of the pole, Hester and Pearl live in separate lives. They keep to themselves, and do things their own way. They remain an outcast from the society, and they don't seem to mind. While all this drama unfolds, Hester and the reverend still share a secret love for each other.

It makes a person blind and narrow-minded. It causes chaos and mistrust. When their fear gets to close, they turn to God. It is the most basic and pure of the human emotions, and the most tragic fact is that no one recognizes it for what it is. They call it a hundred different names. They scream out evil. They call it Satan. They blame their own insecurities and actions on the devil himself, and then they ask God for guidance. It is a formula for tragedy, and that is exactly what happens.

Hester is a strong headed woman. She presents herself with a kind of my way or no way attitude. She was an independent woman waiting on her husband to meet her in the new world. Something like this had never been seen in the virgin community. She came into their home with an understanding of the world. An understanding that most of them could never grasp. She wore bright clothes with lace and celebrated her independence openly. These were her mistakes, but in the same way her destiny.
