INTERVIEW WITH POLE VAULT CAOCH ROB WAHL
The first poles were long and heavy. They were usually made of ash or hickory, with a tripod or triangular piece of iron at the end of the pole. The iron piece kept the pole from sliding. Poles have evolved over the years. After the ash and hickory poles came bamboo poles. The bamboo poles had a metal spike at the end instead of the piece of iron. This was a more effective way to keep the pole from sliding. The metal spike then transformed into a mushroom shaped plug. This type of tip is still used today. The next step in poles was the steel and aluminum poles. By this time rules allowed take off holes in the ground and then boxes that were dug into the ground to plant the pole in. Today the boxes are made out of durable aluminum or steel. "The biggest improvement to poles was the introduction of the fiberglass poles." These poles allow the vaulter to bend the pole and shoot up in the air to achieve greater heights.
The actual event of the pole vault did not begin until about the year 1800. The earliest competitions started in England and Germany. The Germans first practiced pole vaulting as a gymnasium sport for distance. Then about 50 years later the event took a new shape. The pole vault was now being competed for height instead of distance. This is when historians believe that the English, using a pole and vaulting for height, made the event into the idea of a contest.
the event came about. But there is no recorded history that the pole-vaulting event was used in competition during the ancient Olympic games.
Dating back even to primitive men some historians believed that is when pole vaulting first came about. The men did not use poles to compete in competition like they do today. "It is thought that the primitive men used the skills of jumping with the poles as wartime exercises.". The men needed these skills to jump over streams and gullies to escape their enemies or wild beats they were hunting.
