Chrismas in Mexico
First thing is everybody takes off the last two weeks in December to party, spend more time with the family, and visit with friends, and all of the schools are closed for the holidays until January 6. Christmas is one of the biggest celebrations of the year. Christmas in Mexico is celebrated in a lot of ways. One thing they do a lot is the recreation of Mary and Joseph searching for a room at the inn. They first start out by going to their neighbors or if they have a lot of family close by they go with them. So they go to the first house and sing a song about how they are Joseph and Mary and they need a place to stay, then the people who live in the first house sing back about how there is no room at the inn, then they go home. The next day they get the people in the first house and they all go to the second house and on and on. It is supposed to represent Mary and Joseph when they went to pay taxes and all of the people go to the same place so there are no rooms to stay in. So they finely tell the innkeeper at the last house that Mary is pregnant so he lets them stay in the manger. For the adult there is a sting, which is a hot drink or sometimes punch made of fruit and cinnamon sticks, with a shot of alcohol. Christmas in Mexico is more about being with your family or with friends, more than it is about presents like here. They do get some presents but they usually don't go all out like we do. One of their favorite stories to tell around Christmas is the story of Juan Deigeo. Juan Deigeo was a boy who had a vision of a beautiful woman dressed in dazzling white, telling him to build a chapel in a certain spot. The local priest didn't believe Juan Deigeo had really seen the woman and told Juan to bring him proof the next time he saw the beautiful woman. The next time Juan saw her he asked for proof to take to the Priest. The beautiful woman told him to go to the place she wanted the chapel built and pick whatever he saw there and take it to the priest. He found beautiful red roses growing in the snow. He picked them and put them inside his poncho and took them to the priest. When he opened his poncho to show the priest the roses, the silhouette of the beautiful woman, which turned out to be the Virgin Mary, was stained on Juan's poncho. The poncho is still on display at the Cathedral in Mexico City that was built in her honor. A special mass is still said at four in the morning on December 12th in Mexico City because that's when it happened.
