In recent years, there is developed a growing recognition of significance of body image concerns and the increasing rate of clinical eating disorders. The term 'Eating Disorders' means a person who has anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. It makes the publics start to concern about this situation and detecting the prevention of eating disorders. This essay will examine what are eating disorders and the general information about that. Also, it will discuss that what kinds of factors that contribute eating disorders and the prevention of eating disorders. All the information will be related to adults. By examining the term 'Eating Disorders', it is generally used to describe eating patterns that out of the normal range. It usually implicates stern restriction of food intake, this is called anorexia nervosa (Grogan 1999). According to Myers (1998), "an eating disorder in which a normal-weight person (usually an adolescent female) diets and becomes significantly (15 percent or more) underweight, yet, still feeling fat, continues to starve." By observing the factors of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, there is one factor which is suitable for both nervosa. Rosen (cited in Grogan, 1999, p. 168) stated that culture plays an important role in the development of eating disorders. Both anorexia and bulimia are more common in countries that value slimness, and that when people move from cultures that value plumpness to those where slenderness is valued they become more likely to develop problematic relationships with food. However, according to Grogan (1999), "many women are exposed to the 'cultures of slenderness' and only a few become anorexic or bulimic, so clearly other factors are involved." (p.168). We all can see that there are the other factors affect the people develop eating disorders. One other factor that is involved in anorexia nervosa is the excessive food restriction. Garner and Garfinkel (1997) stated that excessive food restriction is the primary behavioral feature of anorexia nervosa. Patients typically follow current popular or faddish weight loss advice which promoted by the mass media, family members, or their peers. They take their restrictive practices to unhealthy extremes, and usually start from a position of normal weight. However, they do not have the any real need to reduce the weight actually. Moreover, the other factor which makes people suffering from anorexia nervosa is that the patients usually has an incorrect estimate towards their bodies.
