Men created an ideological prison that subjected and silenced women. Women were imprisoned in the home, much like a servant tending to the needs of the family. The overall effect of female oppression can range from woman to woman. For some it hardly bothers them and they just accept things the way they are, and for others it can change their whole life. The oppressed women in "The Yellow Wallpaper", and "A Rose for Emily" had their lives ripped from them by their family members looking down upon them. People they had trusted caused severe problems in their life such as the inability to function in the world, difficulty-having relationships, difficulty trusting men, a general contempt for men, and behaviors that were unacceptable in a society.
