It is interesting to note that the famous quote, "Art upsets, science reassures", was made by the French sculptor, painter, and designer, Georges Braque. The difficulty one experiences with art is its inability to be explained due to its basis on feelings experienced by no two individuals. Art is upsetting because one cannot convey the exact picture or feelings that he has towards a piece of art. Ironically, in the words of Braque, "There is only one valuable thing in art: the thing you cannot explain." A feeling of discouragement is often felt when you cannot explain the beauty you see, instead, others may pervert your image and see it completely opposite from you.

The most common view of science is that it deals with reality and facts. This makes science appear to be logical and defined to the average human being, although the scientist would argue that science is complicated and tentative at times, just as an observer can find art confusing and undefined. Lately, artists have focused on this aspect by creating art which is meant to have several meanings. I have come across a printout which can picture either an old and quite unattractive woman as well as a young princess depending on the angle and part of the picture you focus on. Would a person only seeing the old woman be considered incorrect? It all depends on which angle you are looking from. Scientific discoveries, such as gravity, are eventually universally accepted, contrary to art whose interpretation is heavily influenced by culture, individual ethics and moral standing of each individual. Therefore, a universal interpretation of art will not be possible as long as individuality exists. The acceptance of multiple correct viewpoints, in art, often fails to give humans the satisfaction of attaining the correct answer as in science.

Human nature causes us to get used to routine and perhaps we are conditioned to believe that art upsets. When radical changes are made, we are reluctant to accept the new.
