A detailed Summary of Romeo and Juliet


"Romeo and Juliet" is one of the famous tragic stories written by Shakespeare. The story involves with love, death and revenge. The root of the play is the enmity of the two noble families.

William Shakespeare (1564-1616), the English poet and playwright, is usually known as the greatest writer in the English language. Shakespeare was born at Stratford-on-Avon, England. His father was a successful businessman. Shakespeare attended the local grammar school.

Shakespeare began writing as a poet and dramatist about 1591, aged 27, and his plays quickly became famous and popular in London. He wrote many poems, the best known of which are the Sonnets. The poems are famous for their beautiful language and strong emotions. Shakespeare introduced four kinds of plays, namely comedies, history play, tragedies, and romances. His plays were written mostly in verse and were admired for their poetic language, dramatic technique and literary style.

Shakespeare uses several styles of writing in his plays. In "Romeo and Juliet", he used Prose, Sonnets, and Blank.

One day, Romeo, along with Benvolio and Mercutio, joined a party arranged in the Capulet' s house because he wanted to see Rosaline whom he loved. However, in the party, Romeo met Juliet and both of them fell in love with each other immediately. Meantime, Count Paris, kinsman of the king, asked Lord and Lady Capulet for marrying Juliet, but the Lord Capulet disagreed. After the party finished, Romeo escaped from his friends and came to Juliet's room. They expressed their love to each other, and Juliet demanded Romeo to arrange the marriage to prove his pure love.

Next day, at 9 a.m., Romeo sent a message about the wedding to Juliet with Juliet's nurse. In the afternoon, Juliet married Romeo in a chapel, where there were only the priest, Friar Laurence, and the nurse. Away from the marriage, Romeo was challenged to a duel by Tybalt, but Mercutio fought with Tybalt instead. As a result, Mercutio was killed by Tybalt, which provoked Romeo to kill Tybalt in return. Due to this murder, the king of Verona declared that Romeo would be banished to Mantua. At night, Romeo went to Juliet's room and made love to her. What a petty it was, Romeo had to leave Verona on Tuesday morning. When Juliet was told about her wedding to Paris. Juliet rejected the wedding that made her father very angry. A moment later, Juliet quietly went to Friar's house to ask for help. She followed Friar's plan by taking a deathlike-sleep medicine as Wednesday night. On Thursday morning, the wedding ceremony turned to funeral. Lord and Lady Capulet and others believed that Juliet died. However, Friar's plan was not so successful as Romeo did not receive the letter concerning the plan, so Romeo returned to Verona after he was told about Juliet's death. Due to misunderstanding, Paris fought with Romeo at the Capulet vault. Consequently, Paris was killed. Then, Romeo took the poisonous liquid. After that, Juliet awoke and saw her dead husband; therefore, she committed suicide by stabbing herself with Romeo' s dagger.
