Hypothesis: “Two Bourrées” by J.S. Bach is more of a challenge to perform than “Etude 13” by L. Niehaus because the Two Bourrées was originally written for Violoncello, whereas, the Etude was composed specifically for the saxophone.The music of Bach and Niehaus exemplifies the style and characteristics of their period, namely, the Baroque and Twentieth-Century respectively. Through an analysis and comparison of the Two Bourrées by J.S. Bach and Etude 13 by Niehaus, I will prove that these two works are vastly contrasting in style and in their treatment of musical elements which all combine to make the Two Bourrées more of a challenge to perform than Etude 13.
