Antigone

There weren't too many main characters in the play Antigone, but out of all of them one seemed to stand out the most. My favorite character was obviously Antigone for the simple reason that she exhibited many great qualities one could only wish to have. She had a mind of her own and did not let anyone change the way she felt in her heart. As I see it, Antigone was interesting and likeable because she was good- hearted, courageous and admirable.

Antigone was a good-hearted person who didn't just think about herself. She was loyal to her late brother, Polynices, who was killed by his brother Eteocles who was fighting for Creon's Thebes. The king Creon and other people of the kingdom were against the burial of Polynices. He said to his countrymen, "Polynices, who returned from exile, home to his father-city and the gods of his race, consumed w


ith one desire-to burn them roof to roots-who thirsted to drink his kinsmen's blood and sell the rest to slavery: that man -a proclamation has forbidden the city to dignify him with burial at all, mourn him at all" (l. 222-228). Even her other sister Ismene did not want to defy the city and dishonor them by burying her own flesh and blood, she was really scared of what would happen to her. When Antigone told her she was going to bury Polynices Ismene replied, "I'd do them (the gods) no dishonor...but defy the city? I have no strength for that" (l. 93-94). Antigone on the other hand did not think twice about her decision and was going to bury her brother no matter if she had to do it with Ismene or by herself. She did not feel like she was breaking any laws and told Ismene, "No one will ever convict me for a traitor."
