The way we talk to one another effects our relationships with people. It can create problems or solve them. The tone of voice we use, the way we express ourselves, what we say and what we mean all contribute to a conversation. "In Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway the main characters' relationship is dwindling due to the surface conversations they have with one another. In this shot story we step into a conversation of a couple waiting in Madrid at a train station on a bright sunny afternoon with a view of the "long and white"(326) hills across the Ebro River valley. We do not discover the name of the man and only know him as the "American" but the girl we come to know as Jig. From their dialogue, we find out the circumstances of their relationship and how they have come to be at this place and time. It is also through this dialogue that we find what type of relationship the have and how they interact with each other. They are hiding their true feeling about the situation presented to them. We can see this lack of communication and hiding behind false words by the way the characters talk to one another and act towards each other.
The "happy" couple tries to discuss a very serious decision that must be made. While
"I don't feel any way," the girl said. "I just know things."
