Synopsis of Scenes of Shifting Heart

Set in Collingwood (Melbounre) in the early evening of Christmas Eve, late 1950s, this scene introduces most of the characters of the play and also the conflicts existing both between the Italian immigrant family, the Bianchis and their resentful neighbours. During the scene, Momma and Poppa fight about how to react to the treatment they recieve from their neighbours and Poppa confronts Clarry about his promise to take Gino into partnership. Clarry later on confronts Gino about telling Maria he has been fighting. Maria and Clarry also talk about Gino and the partnership. The scene is mainly one of introduction and tells many things about the relationships and feelings which will later influence the storyline substantially.

In the early hours of Christmas morning, Poppa crushes his harmonica, a symbol of his Italian life. He has finally let go. Maria is not seen duirng the scene as she is still inside the house, sick from her pregnancy and with grief, Leila is upstairs with her for most os the scene. Donny, having worn off the effects of the previous night's drinking, seems almost pleasant to Poppa and tries to make amends with Leila, though this does not work. Clarry enters and he and Poppa have a talk, arguing about why Clarry wont go upstairs and see Maria. Lukie enters and tells Clarry, then Momma and finally Poppa more about Gino's death and about the upcoming inquest. The true situation of Clarry's family is revealed. Clarry is argumentative throughout the scene and both his and Poppa's tempers flareas they argue about Gino and what will happen to the family now.
