Critical Expressive
Vincent Van Gogh was born in Brabant, Holland in 1853. His 'bizarre' sense of colour disallowed his access to any art school. It was however this unique 'impressionism' that made his work so popular and valuable to this very day. Van Gogh moved to Paris later on in his life to join his brother Theo. Theo and Van Gogh were always close friends; he always encouraged and inspired him. It was in Paris that Van Gogh started to substitute the dark tones in favour of pure primary and secondary colours. He also began to use a technique known as 'impasto': paint applied thickly without any hesitation. After two years in Paris, during which he painted over 200 pictures, Van Gogh moved to Arles in the south of France where he joined Paul Gauguin, one of his close friends. The tension between the two artists became too strong for them to continue working in the same presence as one another. It was due to this that Gauguin later announced to move back to Paris. A while after the statement Gauguin found himself being followed by Van Gogh whom was making gestures with a razor blade. He returned to the 'yellow house' where he and Van Gogh lived that following morning to find that Van Gogh had been taken to hospital after cutting off part o
One of Andy Warhol's most famous pieces of work is 'Marilyn', which was screen-printed on canvas. This is a common technique used by Warhol in many pieces of his work; it is unique and automatically associated with him. Marilyn Monroe's head is centred in the image to draw the viewer's attention to her world-renowned face. The background of the portrait is a bright blue, which contrasts with the blue on her eyelids. It also helps highlight her head and facial features. Warhol has used an extremely bright, abstract yellow for her hair. I think this particular colour is used to over exaggerate the true colour of her hair. All the colours used in this portrait are bright and powerful, apart from the bland green that is used on Monroes chin and neck. It is my opinion that Warhol has purposely excluded this part of her face to the rest of her head to symbolise the falseness of her cosmetically enhanced jaw. I would also like to declare that her mouth has been deliberately left the original colour to personify the perfection of her moth and voice. David Mach was born in Methil, Fife in 1956. His father was of mining stock, though Mach ventured outwith the local community, as far a field as London, in pursuit of his education in art. He made his mark in the art world by developing an original style of work, producing large, industrial themed sculptures whilst still studying in Scotland. One of his early works was a creation made from car tyres of a Polaris submarine, which achieved him national acclaim. His subjects and material selection remained unusual and novel during his career, much of the materials being discarded as junk and waste from our consumer society. One of Mach's concerns was the overproduction and consumption of materials and resources by western society. Mach realised the potential that unusual materials, such as books, bottles, car tyres and matchsticks, had on his style of work. A notable piece of work Mach produced was
