Internet Censorship
What is a child friendly community? According to Robin Sullivan, a Children's Commissioner, it is, "one which values and respects children and caters for the diversity of their cultural backgrounds and circumstances. It recognizes the impact of political, social and economic decisions on children and their caregivers. It acknowledges the rights, needs and interests of children and builds these into its decision-making processes." (Sullivan, R.) So, keeping this in mind, I ask you, where is the line between "the people's" rights to freedom of speech and "the people's" responsibility to protect the children? (Carr, J.) Adults have a social, moral, political, and human responsibility to hold our children close to their hearts because they are the future. We must provide censorship of the Internet to accomplish this great feat of defending our children and their rights to live out their childhood. This great country of ours has accomplished protecting our children in many ways thus far. We have made it necessary for a person to be of age and show proper identification to purchase liquor, cigarettes, and sexually explicit materials. Why is the Internet any different? W
I know some believe that the government need not be involved with censorship of the Internet (Whittle, R.), but I leave you with this thought from the Senior Fellow of the Ethics and Public Policy Centre in Washington, "We in the democratic world have been living off social and moral capital for many, many decades. It's time to start taking seriously the replenishment of the moral capital necessary to invest in the democratic future."(Weigel, G.) I don't believe the Internet is a bad thing. I think it is a wonderful vast sea of information. It will greatly meet the intellectual and education needs of our children while providing them with a fantastically fun escape from reality for just a little while. No, the Internet shouldn't be done away with like the book burnings that took place once upon a time. It just needs some reforming that enables both adults to have their fun as they see fit and for protection to be provided for our children. I am not quite sure of what the answer may be to this great problem we all face today; I am only sure that we need to act now for our children's sake. hy can't I hear everyone yelling about the fact that dirty magazines sit on a high shelf out of the reach of small hands willing to explore? Will any owner of an adult video and bookstore allow a child to walk in and browse the shelves just because
