Ind Aff
"Ind Aff" by Fay Weldon is a story about a student who is in love with her professor named Peter. Peter cares about her, but does not do the necessary things to show that this is a serious relationship. The reader can see that the character of the female narrator does not stick up for herself in many aspects of this relationship. By the end of the story it is evident that the female narrator is a dynamic character because she starts out as an immature character, then changes into a more mature character. The relationship between the narrator and peter appears to be an awkward one right from the start of the story. She is in this relationship for the wrong reasons, and these reasons have a direct role in the way Peter treats her. The narrator says, "He was supervising my thesis on varying concepts of morality"....I was dependant upon him for my academic future" (165). Her being dependent on him for such a huge thing like her thesis, makes it seem like this is why she is in the relationship in the first place. It seems that peter might feel that he has leverage over her because of this. At the end of the story when they are waiting on their meal, the narrator, who earlier was taking the verbal abuse, finally stands up for herself. She is talking to Peter and catches him make an error in something he has just said. The narrator corrects him and says, "Austro-Hungarian," I said, "not Hungro-Austrarian" (169). This is just the beginning of her change. While she is sitting at the table in the restaurant she notices two handsome waiters. She almost can't help but stare at them and think to herself "What was I doing with this man with thinning hair? (169). At this point she has done a complete turnaround from the way she was acting earlier in the story. While she is looking at the waiters, Peter asks her what she was thinking about, and she responds with, "How much I love you, "I said automatically, and was finally aware of how much I lied"(169). She is now able to see that she does not belong with Peter. She is able to leave him which is something that could not be predicted at the beginning of the story, judging by her weak character. The narrator shows that she is truly a dynamic character by making these decisions that have changed her life. She starts out a confused immature girl who allows her self to be treated badly by Peter. Later, she turns out to be more mature and is able to see that she has made a mistake, and must now move on with her life. This episode with Peter has changed her life for the better. She is aware of this, and is a stronger person because of it. The main thing that
