Beethoven
Beethoven is one of the most well known and respected composers of the world today. He is a house hold name, after writing many pieces for the piano and violin. He achieved greatness through patience and skill. It all started on December 16, 1770, in Bonn, Germany, where Ludwig Van Beethoven was born. The next day he was baptized into Christianity. He was oldest of three kids, with his brothers Casper and Nikolaus. His mother, a former chambermaid, was Maria, Magdalena. H is Father, Johann van Beethoven, was a musician, playing the piano and violin just well enough to give lessons. That and the income from his voice lessons was his salary. As a young man, he worked at the elector's singing soprano and tenor. Johann wanted his eldest son to be a prodigy like Mozart, and started lessons very young. He appointed himself teacher for the young boy, and forced him to practice piano for hours at a time. Johann was an alcoholic, and it is said that he would drag poor Ludwig out of his bed at all hours of the night to play for his pub friends. Because his mother was gravely ill and his father was constantly under the influence of alcohol, Beethoven's family was in need of support. Ludwig was forced into giving lessons to bring in a salary. He still made time for lessons and he kept composing. He even managed to move to Vienna to study with Mozart. He was shortly forced to move back to Bonn. symphonies, several sonatas and other small pieces. However, his hearing was getting worse. He was depressed, and considered suicide. As an alternative, he chose to go back to Vienna, to finish his career out as a composer. By 1822, he had started his greatest piece, the ninth symphony. It was the only piece he ever wrote for a choral group. Ode to Joy, one of the most famous pieces ever, was in this symphony. He conducted the After Haydn left, Ludwig began making a name for himself. On March 29, 1795, Beethoven gave his first public performance in Vienna. It was held at the Burgh theater. He was praised for his passionate strength. He followed the first concert with another. He gained fame quickly, as more and more people came to know his name. Beethoven's mother had died a painful death of tuberculosis, and his father could frequently be found in jail. He was sad to see this, but moved back to Vienna, this time to study with Haydn.
