From a nation of farmers, the United States was changed by the usage of the machinery and progress in production with the Industrial Revolution. Since the 1870s America is the manufacturing leader of the world and leads the world in the production of steel, automobiles and other products. By the 1990s, many advances were made in chemistry, electronics and biotechnology and produced goods from semiconductor circuits to laser surgery. Alsonew farming technology has allowed to produce more food by less farmers. The nation's policy has remained generally free trade. But by the 1970s and 1980s many American manufacturing industries lost their power by new competition from abroad. The American economy is changing continuously. Citizens can freely trade in market places. Their economy is based on free enterprise. Every economic system tries to meet the human needs by the production and distribution of goods and services.
