The Soviet Union supported the Peoples movements for the liberation of Angola (MPLA), the United States supported the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and to make matters worse South Africa supported the Liberation of Angola (FNLA). The MPLA managed to gain control of the country and proclaimed it as Angola as communist. This then caused civil war with the support of the United States and South Africa.
