Writing With Evidence

Evidence: The answer to the question without an answer

Writing can be many things to many different people. To some people it is for fun or a way to express ones opinions and or feelings for something. For others it is a job that they must perform in their every day life. With writing there are so many things you can do. You can solve problems, create problems, have fun, persuade audiences, describe life events, and in some cases write with evidence and prove points. With all these kinds of writing there is always someone behind it that has to write it. In some cases people like myself find it interesting how you can write using evidence in which your writing with that evidence decides on a verdict and or answer to a question or problem. In my pursuit to find out how you write with important evidence to decide on a verdict to an important case I have found a person in particular who can answer my question.

That person is my Uncle Jeff. Jeff works for a company located in Hyde Park called, M.V. Engineering, which translates into Motor Vehicle Engineering. His job title would most commonly be described as a Professional Witness. Jeff actually works for insurance company's who hire his company to investigate crashes or acciden

While interviewing my uncle I found many different questions to ask as he answered questions that I has asked him before that. One thing I needed to know is, just whom does he write for? "My immediate audience typically consists of insurance people and lawyers. However ultimately my final report will be presented to a jury or judge to help them understand the technical aspect of the accident," he said. So its understood that he writes for the insurance companies so they can present evidence in the courtroom. So how much does he write in each of his reports? "My reports are generally 6-10 pages of text with 20-50 photographs and 3-6 sketches for demonstrative purposes. The length of the report is generally dictated by the severity of the claim. Typically, a fatal accident will warrant a much lengthier and detailed report," he said. Usually every report that he writes differs from case to case. Although most of the cases are different he has one object in mind when he sits down to write. That object is to make the paper understandable to read. "I want the audience to understand what the evidence says, whether it agrees with or contradicts the witnesses. A lot of times my reports are used to help a jury make a decision as to which witnesses are telling the truth or which witnesses have a better recollection of the accident and how it actually occurred," he said. I would say that it is good to use big words in your writing so that the audience feels that you know what you are talking about. With out using bigger words with more meaning, one might think that you don't deserve to be writing reports. "I use some big words, but usually not to many. My reports need to be simple and easily understood by lay people and some times people that have no more than 9-10 years of education. Big words often confuse jury members and that's not a good thing, I try to avoid that at all costs. I have to use simple words but I must also be able to
