The Life of Gaius Julius Caesar
Gaius Julius Caesar was born in a working class quarter of the great city of Rome on July 13, 100 BC. In Rome a newborn child is laid on the ground by his/her mother then their father has the option to pick up and accept responsibility for the child or to leave the child. If the baby is left it could be killed, raised by another member of the family, or rescued by a slave trader/owner. Luckily for Gaius, when he was laid on the floor his father welcomed him into his family. On the ninth day of his life little baby Gaius got his name. Caesar's full name is composed of three names. All three names have a symbolic meaning to his family. His first and last name was that of his father & grandfather. His middle name was the name of the clan that his family belonged to. On his fathers side of the family Caesar belongs to the Julian "gens" (clan), and on his mother's side he belongs to the Aurelian gens. Each clan has a past all in itself. His father's clan, Julian, claims to be descended from Venus. And on his mothers side a rich plebian family is the staple of the clan. His uncle (by marriage to his Aunt Julia) was the famous general Gaius Marius. He was the leader of the Populares and held the position of consul (highest political
Caesar leaves for Asia to fight against Pharnaces, who wants to take back the land that Pompey took over from his father in 64BC. During the battle, which took place on August 2, 47BC, Caesar crushes Pharnaces and sums up the battle of Zela in three words, "Veni, vidi, vici!" (I came, I saw, I conquered.). These are famous words that are still very well known today. Caesar also mocks Pompey's achievements from twenty years before. He states "Fortunate Pompey, here are the enemies whose defeat won you the name great." (Pompey had crushed Mithradates, causing people to address him as Magnus. The largest part of the civil war took place at Munda on March 17, 45BC. Caesar wins again. Gnaeus is decapitated and Sextus flees. Caesar at last was going to enjoy supreme power and received the sanctity of tribunes (which made it illegal to harm him). Caesar also obtained honors to increase his prestige. He wore the robe, crown, and scepter that a triumphant general wore and used the title "imperator." In 70BC Caesar aided Pompey in running for consul. Because there are two consuls required, Caesar earned the other position. In 69 BC, Caesar was elected quaestor and in 65 BC curule aedile. He gained great popularity for his extravagant gladiatorial games. To pay for these he borrowed money from Crassus (the richest man in Rome). The borrowing of the money, along with the gladiatorial games, united them. They also found common cause with Pompey. When Caesar returned to Rome in 60 BC, after a year as governor of Spain, he joined forces with Crassus and Pompey in a three-way union known as the First Triumvirate. To cement their relationship further, Caesar gave his daughter, Julia, to Pompey in marriage. In 82 BC when Lucaius Cornelius Sulla was made dictator he ordered a list of enemies to be killed. Caesar, because of his relation to Marius, was ordered to div
