Stereotypes
A detailed Summary of Stereotypes
In today's society, material belongings are very important to people. How people dress has a big impression on how people will view them. Strictly based on how they are dressed, many people get a first impression before even speaking to them. For instance, if someone is wearing glasses people might perceive them as being smart or if someone is wearing a black trench coat; people might perceive them as being weird and frightening. From these different impressions, people get judged and stereotypes are made. Each day I walk around campus, I notice other people's appearance and automatically assume a certain stereotype for them.
While eating lunch at the Hawk's Nest I observed UNCW students and their fashion styles. There was a group of sorority girls that literally looked all the same. Each and everyone one of them had their sorority shirts on that shows what sorority group they are belonged too. They also had dirty blue jeans on with holes in them because, apparently, that is the
new trend for them. The girls also were wearing silver jewelry with their initials on it.
Another group of students that had a much different fashion than the group of sorority girls was a female student and a male student with a UNCW athlet

People promote themselves the way they want people to perceive them, but by people expressing their individuality by their appearance they are often stereotyped. In each group I created a personality to go along with their outward appearance. The first group of girls I observed I perceived them to have a lot of money and somewhat snobby, because they walk around campus like they are Britney Spears or some type of superstar. They seem to look better than everyone else in a fashion perspective, or they thought they did at least.
of hair was out of place and there make-up was perfect. I also made the assumption that they had a lot of money because they all had matching jewelry and stylish jeans. The second group of people I observed, I assumed were very athletic. I noticed that they do not care as much about what they look like because they were wearing a t-shirt and sport shorts. They must really care about their sport and perhaps want everyone to perceive them as being athletes by wearing a UNCW athlete shirt. I definitely figured the third group I observed to be very individualistic. They look very different from the other groups I observed, so I assumed they did not care what people think of them and dressed however they want.
a person's appearance and fashion styles can reveal how that p
