Since the first story is Grace and Mike's past lives having them play the roles of Margaret and Roman helps put the parallel between the two stories. Derek Jacobi plays an excellent hypnotist in the film; no one would ever be able guess the end result due to his performance. You also have Academy Award Winner Robin Williams playing an old hypnotist and a small grocery store owner, who helps Mike out with theories of hypnosis and past life regression.
