Nature vs. Nurture

A detailed Summary of Nature vs. Nurture

The controversy over what determines who we are, whether it is Nature (heredity, our biological make up) or Nurture (our environment). Through the past decades psychologists have developed different theories to explain the characteristics of human-beings; how we feel, think and behave. Usually, these theories were one directional in the nature/nurture question. I do not think there is a middle ground between nature and nuture. I think that nurture over rules most heredity aspects, environment, and their affects on determining ones development and behavior. Infact, the more we understand about development and behavior, the more obvious it becomes that nurture has more influence on someone's personality and behavior.

"Our genes made us. We animals exist for their preservation and are nothing more than their throwaway survival machines." This is what Richard Darwin stated in his book: The Selfish Gene. We both shared the equal amount of love and care. We both were A students in high school, but his senior

Social scientists have been struggling for centuries deciding whether our personalities are born or made. In the past twenty years, it has been discovered that there is a genetic component to about every human trait and behavior. However genetic influence on traits and behavior is partial because genetics account on average for half of the variations of most traits. "It is not nature versus nurture, but the interaction of nature and nurture drives development," the words of Urie Bronfrenbrenner, who studied genetics. Also, people may react to us in a certain way because of a genetically influenced personality and, we may choose certain experiences because they fit best with our instinctive preferences. This means that our experiences may be influenced by our genetic tendencies. One way researchers study the development of traits and behaviors is by measuring the influence of genetics through out ones life span, and it is found to be that the genetics influence on certain trait increase as people age. A research was done to see whether a trait would show up a in a child if it was environmentally influenced or genetically influenced. A child was given more negative attenti
