Lord of the Flies: Simon

Amongst the boys which have be stranded on the coral island, There is one certain character, a character that is different from the rest of the boys, a character which is wise and understanding but most of all importance a character with a symbol. This character is Simon. He is one of the most symbolic characters from the beginning to end.

The story, Lord of the Flies is mainly about good and evil on an island between a group of young boys aging from approximately six to twelve. The story is full of meanings, which involve certain characters.

The story begins when a group of boys are plane wrecked on an island. There is no other land to be seen. Firstly it begins with two characters which are Piggy and Ralph. They call for others to search for survivors. The two boys meet up with a large group of young boys known as the littl'uns. Everything goes fine until the evil of the island arrives which are the choirboys. Their leader is Jack Merridew who is the most ignorant one of the boys; him and his choirboys become 'the hunters'. When the hunters first arrive it symbolizes the story of the Garden of Eden. It shows that the island/garden of Eden is overrun by the evil, which comes towards the group of boys.

Ralph and Jack begin an argument over the beast and Ralph claims that Jack's hunters can't even kill the beast.

"The beast was on its knees"(Pg.188 Chapter9)

Simon is the first to recognize the true beast that it is just an internal fear and the others should learn to accept this before the evil becomes a large quantity of their souls. Like martyrs who die for others, Simon is killed as he tries to explain the true beast. Know that he is killed the boys are unable to find the true beast inside their souls.
