Nobuo Uematsu

A detailed Summary of Nobuo Uematsu

I'm probably not exaggerating if I say that Nobuo Uematsu is the most famous gamemusician in the world. Since 1985 has he been composing music for the now world-famous games called "Final Fantasy", and is definitely one of the main reasons to the success. And even though he has a tight schedule and extremely high demands from the players, has he always written music of fantastic quality and many, many masterpieces.

Nobuo was born in the end of the fifties, or more precise on March 21 1959, in Kouchi City in Japan. Like most parents do, Nobuos wanted him to become either a doctor or a lawyer. Nobuo himself had thought of a carrier as a pro-wrestler or an olympic athlete. Fortunally, something made him change his mind.

During the seventies, artists such as Elton John and Mike Oldfield inspired him. He also claims to be a fan of ABBA. He began playing the piano at the age of 12, because at the time he wanted to be Elton John.

He began studying at the Kanagawa-university, but was more interested in other things than his studies (he actually didn't study music). In some way, he finally managed to finish the studies and work with the things he liked to do. Until the age of 22, he joined many amateur bands as a keyboard player.

He worked with small commercial-jobs until a friend of his, who had a part-time job at Squaresoft, offered him a job. It was hard to get a music job in Japan, and therefore he answered yes right at the moment. The year was 1985, and Nobuos carrier as a game-musician had just started.

Nobuo himself does not have a favorite song from his creations. He seems to always be most proud of his latest creation. He also likes to write different kinds of music. He likes to write ballads in the 70s style, and is very fond of lyrical songs. Still, he tries not to be very genre-specific. He says that his task is to make sure that he is able to express the emotions that he wants to. He thinks it will be a shame if we won't be able to cry as we play.

But he loved to write more than playing. So he decided to become a composer, and sent demo tapes to many, many companies. One of them picked him up, and his first professional job was a small composition for a radio company.

Just like most japans, Nobuo is a very humble man. His main goal is just to write good music. Such good music that even the staff working with the game gets emotional when playing it. Here is a quote from one of his collections "Love Will Grow": "Even Tchikovski's musics are just random symbols on a piece of paper, without musicians to play them. Likewise, a violin is just a wooden block without a player. An unused computer is just a box. Things come alive when humans use them, find something out of them, and think about them. In that instant, a "thing" becomes an "instrument" for the first time. This silver colored disc is not complete yet. This disc is complete only if you listen and fi
