Following the Plot in Harrison Bergeron

Following the Plot in Harrison Bergeron

A plot is described as a pattern of events or the main story in a narrative or drama. The traditional way of a plot would be to use the freytag pyramid. This was coined by the 19th century thinker, Gustav Freytag. He said that a narrative or short story follows a pyramid and has 5 points. At the bottom of the pyramid is the exposition, followed by a rising action. At the top of the pyramid is the crisis or turning point for the story. Then on the way back down the pyramid is the falling of action, then at the bottom of the other side of the pyramid is denouement. In the short story Harrison Bergeron the plot follows this pyramid precisely.

In the beginning of Harrison Bergeron, the exposition is first. This involves explaining the setting and the characters. His first sentence explains the year which was 2081 and everyone was equal. This gives you an understanding of when this takes place and that everyone will be equal. Kurt Vonnegut pounds this for the characters by saying things such as “Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anyone else.” He then goes on to write that amendments were made
