Romeo and Juliet
Why is act 1 scene 5 an important scene in the play and how has Shakespeare used language to arouse our interests? How successfully has Baz Luhrmann's version brought the text to life on screen? At the start of the act 1 scene 5 the serving men are working while Capulet welcomes his guests to the party. He encourages them to dance but some of the ladies are shy and Capulet teases them saying, "which of you all will deny to dance? She that makes dainty, she I'll swear hath corns." This shows us that Capulet is humorous to his guests and like to throw a good party. Romeo then catches first sight of Juliet and falls in love with her. Romeo forgets about Rosaline, this scene is important to Romeo because it is when he catches first sight of Juliet. He says, " Did my heart love till now?" This shows us that he is admitting his true love for Juliet. Originally Romeo was expecting to come to this party and be dazzled by Rosaline's beauty and that no other lady there would compare to her but he was wrong. Love and Rosaline have hurt Romeo. "Is love a tender thing? It is too rough, too rude, too boisterous, and it pricks like thorn." This shows how this scene is important to Romeo. While Romeo is admiring Juliet, Tybalt r
Tybalt contributes the theme of hate when he hears that Romeo is at the party and fate is contributed to a few times. Romeo refers to fate before they come in to the party. "I fear too early; for my mind misgives some consequence, yet hanging in the stars." He makes another mention to fate during the party when he finds out that Juliet is a Capulet. "Is she a Capulet? O dear account, my life is my foe's debt." Juliet also refers to fate. "My only love sprung from my only hate." Tybalt says that he will endure him "but this intrusion shall, now seeming sweet, convert to bitterest gall." The themes of love, hate and fate are all contributed to in this scene. The theme of love is contributed to Romeo and Juliet and where they first talk and kiss. Romeo says this about Juliet. "Did my heart love till now? Forswear it sight, for I ne'er saw true beauty till this night." Romeo goes over and starts to talk to Juliet who is looking to see if she likes Paris. Before the dance Lady Capulet has informed Juliet that Paris wants to marry her and she says she will look to see if she likes him. Romeo approaches Juliet and touches her hand and he speaks to her for the first time. Romeo takes Juliet's hand and offers to kiss it; she is slightly reluctant, suggesting that shaking hands would be a more appropriate greeting. When they start talking they talk in a shakespearean sonnet and also in religious terminology. Romeo and Juliet use such words as "holy" "shrine", "pilgrims", "saints", "prayer" and "faith". As they talk Romeo kisses Juliet and then Juliet comments on his kiss. "You kiss by th' book."
