George Washington
George Washington has contributed greatly to our societies ideals. His ethics and morals helped shape the American nation. Washington made many contributions in the early development of America. His battles during the Revolution, the work he did in at the Constitutional Confederation, his rejection of the concept of monarchy in America, and of course, his work as the first president of America. His ideas have fashioned American principles, and for this he deserves all the recognition available. A stamp is a permanent tribute to such a great man. Washington is a constant reminder of the triumphs of the America people.Firstly, it's important to review his duties as the General of the Continental Army. Washington was not a big supporter of Britain. He felt that America was an independent country under its' own jurisdiction. He also felt that it might at some point be necessary for America to defend itself. "....as a last resource... American should be prepared to take up arms to defend their ancestral liberties from inroads of our lordly Masters in Great Britain" (Washington, Encarta 2000). These ideas made him the perfect candidate to lead America into battle and in the mid-1700's, when he w
As the first President, Washington made many contributions that helped define the idea of Presidency. The way he conducted himself is a tribute to his style of leadership. He was an organized but simple man who believed in listening to his supporters and getting input from other points of view. He had great faith in his advisors Hamilton and Jefferson, who although didn't share the same views as each other provided Washington with an objective opinion. Washington agreed to pass a bill that would open the First National Bank, but this was the only major event to take place during his first term. By his 60th birthday Washington was tired and wanted deeply to retire, but the country felt that handing over the leadership to a knew person so early in American development might not be wise and so in 1792 Washington was re-instated for a second term. After his second term he retired quietly, and in retrospect we see what a great man he truly was. His ability to win a war event when all the odds are stacked against him, his unique ideals and perspective on the countries future, and his capability to lead a country though its infancy make him a man to marvel. He has created a model for every other American citizen to follow, and for this he deserves to be recognized. A stamp commemorating his triumphs is perhaps not enough,
