In the 1970’s the United States faced many new conflicts because of the Watergate scandal: stagflation, the Iranian hostage crisis, and defeat in Southeast Asia in 1975. People were suffering from the worst inflation crisis in American history and started to believe that they were stuck in a world of struggles and shortages. In 1980 Ronald Reagan, a Republican, ran for president and said he would revive the United States in a manner that Jimmy Carter could not match. When Reagan became President of the United States people began to regain their hope of a better nation.
