Truth is defined as Honesty: the real state of things: FACT. But how do we know if there is any truth in the world at all today? What if we mistake the actual truth with illusion? I do believe that illusion is necessary in human existence. I believe that without illusion in the world we would all go mad. We use illusion in the form of lies to cover up our mistakes and pain to keep ourselves and others from the actual truth which would be reality. We have all, at one time told a lie to cover up the truth, because in reality the truth hurts. So maybe, in reality we actually make reality an illusion.

Remedios Varo, Visit to the Plastic Surgeon, 1960, is a good example of illusion. In this work of art the artist shows you a woman, veiled walking into a plastic surgeons office. Or is it more than that? The woman is very beautifully built, we would all kill for a body like hers, yet her nose is elongated and disfigured. Her actions show that she wants to change; she does not accept herself for who she is. She wants to create an illusion of beauty, like the figure shown in the window. The woman that is veiled believes that the woman in the window is the perfect form of beauty and if she changes herself to look like her, sh

e will be accepted and beautiful. Yet the figure in the window looks very unhappy and uncertain of herself. She looks as if she is looking towards the veiled woman in hopes that she will realize that her beauty is created by another person it is not her natural beauty, it is just an illusion. While the veiled woman looks the opposite direction paying her no mind. I believe that the artist is trying to show us that beauty is from within, and has nothing to do with outer beauty. He is also showing how the illusion of beauty affects other people's point of view about themselves. There is no such thing as a perfect person or a perfect body, yet today plastic surgeons can make the illusion of one. In today's world it seems that you have to be "beautiful" to be liked and happy, when in reality all you need to do is look inside you, and be yourself.

In the short story False Gems, the author gives you many illusions behind the written reality. M. Lantin had fallen in love with the most beautiful, perfect woman in the world. He loved her deeply as she loved him the same. The only thing that he felt inclined to blame her for was her love for the theater and her love for false jewelry. He would go with her to the theater and let her wear her false gems to make her happy, out of his love for her; giving her the illusion that he enjoyed these two things. But M. Lantin was not the only one using illusion as reality in this story. After his beautiful wife died that he loved so dearly, he became very poor and unhappy. The author states on page 190 that, "M. Lantin's despair was so great that his hair became white in one month". As he struggled to eat and his income and household fell apart, he decided to sell his wife's precious false g
