Truth is defined as Honesty: the real state of things: FACT. But how do we know if there is any truth in the world at all today? What if we mistake the actual truth with illusion? I do believe that illusion is necessary in human existence. I believe that without illusion in the world we would all go mad. We use illusion in the form of lies to cover up our mistakes and pain to keep ourselves and others from the actual truth which would be reality. We have all, at one time told a lie to cover up the truth, because in reality the truth hurts. So maybe, in reality we actually make reality an illusion. Remedios Varo, Visit to the Plastic Surgeon, 1960, is a good example of illusion. In this work of art the artist shows you a woman, veiled walking into a plastic surgeons office. Or is it more than that? The woman is very beautifully built, we would all kill for a body like hers, yet her nose is elongated and disfigured. Her actions show that she wants to change; she does not accept herself for who she is. She wants to create an illusion of beauty, like the figure shown in the window.
