Crucible

The play, The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, is a story about a group of girls who selfishly accuse people of witchcraft to save themselves. The accused people are put on trial. These trials are known as the Salem Witchcraft Trials. This is known as a crucible, a crucible is a severe trial. Arthur Miller uses the Salem Witchcraft Trials of 1692 to point out the dangers of the movement during the 1950's by Senator Joseph McCarthy to seek out and to identify the members of the Communist Party in America. Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Proctor are the two main characters in this story. These two characters are different as well as they are alike.

Abigail and Elizabeth are both jealous of each other. "She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman


, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a-"(1099). Abigail tells this to John while the two are talking in the woods and she is trying to get with him again. John tells her that he will cut off his own hand before going back to her again. She gets jealous and gets Elizabeth arrested. Throughout the play, Abigail gets jealous of Elizabeth because she wants John and cannot have him. Elizabeth is jealous of Abigail because she knows that John once loved her and she still thinks that they still do love each other.

Out of the two characters, Elizabeth and Abigail, I think that Abigail was the stronger character. Reason being, she did not need help from anyone to protect herself.
