Drinking, Right or Wrong

There is an ongoing controversy over whether or not drinking alcoholic beverages is wrong. The subject of alcoholism is argued about over and over again between many Christian and non-Christian groups, not only in America, but throughout the world. Many Christians claim that the consumption of alcohol is morally wrong on the basis of Bible, yet the non-believer finds absolutely nothing wrong with drinking the substance. God wants nothing but the best for his creation; therefore, nothing negative can come from a man deciding to believe in the Bible. God wants nothing but positive things for what he has created. If God took the time to create man, he will take the time to care and provide for him. Why would he not care if man takes a harmful substance into his body? That idea is absolutely absurd. Does one actually think for a minute that a man would approve of his children making a choice to take into their bodies something that will harm them greatly? If he does he is not a very caring father. He is basically allowing his sons or daughters to kill themselves. This same principle is found in God's character. He loves what he has created, so he does not want to see it harmed.

Despite what God and Christians have to say about alcohol, this world still has its own views of the issue. Around the world, various countries look at alcohol as just another beverage. In Ireland there is no set age for buying or consuming alcohol. They believe that if you can pick up the glass and have the money, then you can have it. Children can walk into a pub and buy themselves a beer, and no one would think anything of it. However, here in the United States there is a set age for drinking. Who is right and who is wrong? Who is to define the moral standards by which the world lives? Once again, we should allow God and His Word to rule our lives. If we surrender ourselves to Him, we can begin to realize that the use of alcohol is merely a temporary fix that doesn't solve any problems in the long run and usually creates more.

Even in spite of those negative effects, many people still run to alcohol for relief from their everyday problems. Alcoholics find that they are dependent on alcohol and that they can't survive or make it through a single day without it. Manic-depressive people run to it to solve their problems. People with hectic lives use it to calm their nerves, and those with anger issues say it calms them down and helps them cope with life. In brief, drinking is not always fun. People are dependent upon alcohol and use it to try to fill the void left by whatever is lacking in their lives, while what they really need is God and his word.
