Comparing how different media sources cover found artifact
The public is constantly receiving new information about what is going on in the world around them. This is referred to as current events, or news. News can be reported through many different mass mediums. For example we have: television, newspapers, radio, and internet. Through these types of media, the same issues are covered in different ways. The most obvious battle for the public's attention is between newspapers and T.V. A topic that caught my eye, was the discovery and translation of an ancient Hebrew ossuary. An ossuary is a limestone burial box for bones. This type of burial was used by the Jews between 20 B.C. and A.D.70. Like that of a modern-day headstone, there was an inscription in the Aramaic language, "James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus". Andre Lemaire, who translated this, said that it is "very probable" the writing refers to Jesus of Nazareth. He dates the ossuary to A.D. 63, just three decades after the crucifixion. Lemaire is a specialist in ancient inscriptions. This box, which is 20 inches long by 11 inches wide, is said to be the oldest archaeological record of Jesus. Lemaire said that out of hundreds of such boxes found with Aramaic writing, only two contain mentions of a brother. From this, schola
rs infer that the brother was mentioned only when he was someone important. James, Joseph and Jesus were common names in ancient Jerusalem, a city of about 40,000 residents. Lemaire estimates there could have been as many as 20 James' in the city with brothers named Jesus and fathers named Joseph. However, it is highly unlikely that there would have been more than one James who had a brother of such importance that his name is mentioned on his ossuary. Two different types of media, one universal issue. Both get the point across and both use different methods to do so. Which one is more effective? It depends on the audience, because some people like to read newspapers, and others like to watch the news. In my case, both helped me understand and arouse interest in the topic. I think that watching the news helped me to put the pieces that I read in the article together. Each is a good way to learn about current events and each has many characteristics that distinguish one from the other. Another way that news is presented is through newspapers. Newspapers were one of the first methods of mass media. They are portable, accessible, predictable, and cost-effective. They will always be around, because they are one of the easiest ways to find out what is going on in the world. They too, have different methods of presenting ideas. Usually there will be a headline, a pictu
