In fact, most of the research done by linguists is focused on finding rules. Syntactic structures are patterns that could be explained by rules. e chatter, but grammatically correct. This quote demonstrates that form can be separated from meaning or syntax can be separated from semantics, it does not appear to mean anything coherent but it does sound like an English sentence. There is more to what determines the structure of a sentence than whether or not it has meaning, words do not have to go together in a meaningful way they just have to possess syntax.

Noam Chomsky explores the question of what occurs in the human brain that allows people around the world to know how to use language. He asserts that humans are the only species to use syntax. The great achievement of language is that we can think in abstractions, that we can say anything we can think, and that only humans can express new things through language.
