Gender Issue

A baby is born and the doctor looks at the proud parents and says three simple words: :It・s a boy!; or :It・s a girl!; Before a newborn child even takes his or her first breath of life outside the mother・s womb, he or she is distinguishable and characterized by gender. The baby is brought home and dressed in clothes that help friends, family, and even strangers identify the sex of the child.

When I was young I did not think about my gender role. I did not think about the day to day events in my life that affected my gender. When I look back I can find so many instances of gender in my life. I am taking one of the smallest instances because of the many ways it relates to not only gender building, but maintaining. As a child I remember my sister and I loved to play outside in the cold season. So, my parents bought us matching coats. They were pink with purple trim. My friend, Neo, who lived next street to me, had a coat too. His was black and red with a logo of a baseball on the back. As a child I never thought of the implications of my coat. It was functional and I thought the color pink was pretty at the time. My room was pink, my bike was pink, and Barbie・s house was pink. Why should it be any other way? With
