Brave New World
Prophecy: a prediction of the future under the influence of divine guidance. In the novel Brave New World, Huxley writes of ideas that are so futuristic they are seen to be almost insane. Huxley touches upon numerous imaginative thoughts within his work that would not have even crossed the minds of citizen during that period in time. The three concepts in which Huxley prophesizes throughout the novel are cloning and how reproduction has been taken over by the making of test tube babies, diversions and how they are used as socio-political tools, and finally the use of consumerism and how society is controlled. Throughout Huxley's work there are many parallels between the novel and our society today, but none are more significant than the roles of cloning, diversions and consumerism. One could argue that Huxley consciously delivers a valuable message: control advancements in technology before they control us. Huxley supports this message with a strong example of a society that is so overrun by technology that the human race has lost their individuality, freedom, and ultimately their identity as human beings. In this "Brave New World," artificially born humans are genetically engineered, divided into castes, molded into machines th
The final thing that Huxley prophesizes about is consumerism. Huxley is totally against it because he says it enslaves mankind (http://mural.uv.es/~mifepra/mainthe.htm). Man is like a machine and is made to fit it: "once started the machine demands (under threat of economic ruin_ that it shall never be unnecessarily stopped, never thorn out of its stride. Production and yet more production (Sexton, Rationalization, 91). People within the society are just thrown into different castes and don't question their way of life. They are programmed to be satisfied with their life. For example Epsilon workers produce goods and that's all. People are also controlled by hypnopedia. An example would be the goods that the Epsilon workers produce; the others would be forced to buy them because of it. Members of the New World are forced into perpetual consumerism and are slaves to the economic machine. There is a very strong association with today's society as to the hypnopedia. Now a days it is the television that controls our minds. It advertises products and makes its viewers believe that they need to buy their products in order to keep up their social status in society. The society in the New World is so dehumanized that even mass production is applied in creating babies, but this is a way of having lots of people working for such a consumistic society and these people don't even care because they hardly think. Is this the perfect system for a society that wants stability? Manual workers don't get fed up with their work, they don't protest, and work is efficiently done, because these people are created only for this cause, for working, and making people from other castes' lives easier. In conclusion, one could evidently see that cloning, socio-political tools and cons
