World War II vs. Vietnam
Probably the most dramatic difference between World War II and Vietnam is the way America felt about the wars after they were both over. At the end of World War, most Americans came out from the war convinced that they had won the "Good War." (The American Promise pg.701) However, the same couldn't be said about the Vietnam War. It is known that Vietnam was the longest and the second most costly of the wars fought by the United States. It has also shown that in U.S. Polls, two of three Americans judge the war as a "Mistake." (www.members.aol.com/jmstarr/index.html) Even though people might disagree, listen to the facts and you will know why.The Vietnam War is one of the most disgraceful periods in American history. Not only did an almost third-world nation best the greatest superpower in the world, but it also embarrassed them as well. Perhaps this war could have been won, or even prevented in the first place. The United States could have and should have won this war, with a combination of better weapons usage, better tactics, and better support from their home country. Before the War, Vietnam was a hotly disputed territory. Many countries had taken Vietnam over, and after World War II, Vietnam were in the hands of France.
America's involvement in World War II was quite different though than in Vietnam because in Vietnam, American soil was not in any overwhelming danger as it was in World War II. Just as America did in Vietnam, one country saw and understood that Germany and its allies would have to be stopped. America's Involvement in World War two not only contributed in the eventual downfall of the insane Adolph Hitler and his Third Reich, but also came at the precise time and moment. Had the United States entered the war any earlier the consequences might have been worse. As you can see, many things separate the war of Vietnam and that of World War II. Maybe because of the weapons and technology that was used or maybe of the because of the different positions that America was in before and after the war. In the beginning of World War II, America was looking for a way to become economically stable and found the war as a foundation to build the economy. As for the Vietnam War, America was already a world power who wanted to play war hero for Vietnam. However, would we have entered the war if we knew we were gonna have such disappointing results. Such that accounted for more than 58, 000 deaths of America's men. Politicians should have taken notes from former politicians during World War II so they should not get America involved if it did not concern them. They should have known very well that their job is to promote peace...not war! America's most vital interest, defense of American soil, had been challenged. At last America had to go to war and eventually bring an end to the rule of nazi Germany. The Americans upon declaring its Neutrality, gave additional encouragement to Japan and Germany to in a way "take over the world", and to Nazify it. Hitler had convinced himself that America had declined in the 1930's because of social crisis. This misconception also led Japan to confront the United States in 1941. Had the United States entered the war any earlier or later the consequences could have been much worse (If possible). On December 6, 1941 the Japanese Airforce led a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, completely eradicating the port. Finally President Roosevelt could wait no longer. America was now involved and not going to war would only endanger the United States more than
