Apperance vs Reality

Has one ever experienced something and it appeared to be one way, but in reality it was something totally different? The stories, "The False Gems", Tartuffe, and "How Much Land Does a Man Need?" all have characters that appear to be good, but turn out to be bad.

The story, "The False Gems", is about a happy husband and wife living a wonderful life, or at least that's what it appears to be. M. Lantin, the husband, marries a beautiful perfect woman. Everyman wanted her, and he was sure he was the only man to have her. M. Lantin was very much in love with his wife. There were only two things that bothered him about her, "her love of the theater, and a taste for false jewelry" (689). M. Lantin's wife dies leaving him with nothing but a broken heart, and a lot of false jewelry. He becomes very depressed, and poor. He decides to sell all the jewelry. He takes one of the necklaces to two different jewelers; they both offer him many, many francs for the necklace. M. Lantin gets very confused. He knows that they never had enough money for real e

In the beginning of Tartuffe, two people think Tartuffe is the greatest most pious man ever. Madame Pernelle and her some Orgon practically worship the ground he walks on. Orgon even tells his daughter that she must marry Tartuffe after he promised Valere that she could marry him. "Tartuffe shall be/ Allied by marriage to this family, / And he's to be your husband," (574). Tartuffe has this great dream of an affair with Orgon's wife, Elmire. Everyone tries to tell Orgon over and over again that Tartuffe is not a good person, but Orgon refuses to believe it until he hides and witnesses Tartuffe asking Elmire to have an affair with him. Orgon gets very upset. He kicks Tartuffe out of the house. Tartuffe sends a bailiff to get Orgon and his family out of the house. Tartuffe now has the deed for the house. Orgon refuses to leave. Tartuffe goes to tell him to leave himself. An officer follows Tartuffe and arrests him, because even the king knows Tartuffe is a fake. Tartuffe appears to be such a loyal man, but in reality he is a very evil greedy
