Night
The book Night by Elie Wiesel is an account of his life as a child in the early 1940's in Jewish concentration camps. What happened to him and millions of other Jews is horrible for anyone to have endured. Elie witnessed his father's death among other horrific deaths of children and adults. The torture he and others went through is captured in this book. Elie was born in Sighet Transylvanisa and he spent most of his childhood here living with his mother, father and sister. Elie studied the Talmud and at night he " ran to the synagogue to weep over the destruction of the temple." When he was twelve he befriended Moshe the Beadle who was a very poor and humble man who started to teach Elie the studies of the Cabbala. Moshe and Elie would stay up late at night in the synagogue and talk about the mysteries of the Cabbala. Then one day the life of Moshe and of Elie would all change forever. All the Foreign Jews from Sighet including Moshe were expelled. Life eventually went back to normal for Elie and the people of Sighet. Then one day Elie saw Moshe sitting on a bench several months after he was expelled. Moshe then began to tell Elie about the torture of the Jews and how, " babies were thrown into the air and the machin
Elie's final torture came when they left the last concentration camp they were at and he and his father and the others were made to run in the snow in a huge blizzard. Elie still ran and kept up even though he had injured his foot. Elie witnessed people dying left and right during this journey. If you didn't increase your pace the officers would yell and say, " Faster you swine, you filthy son's of bitches." To Elie the "movement warmed them up a little, One felt oneself reviving." It was so cold out that Elie and the others felt warm running and sweating in the cold. When they finally reached Gleiwitz all the people were shoved into the barracks on top of one another. Elie couldn't even breathe because there were dead people and people who were alive on top of him. Somehow though Elie still had hope left and he managed to find an air hole and his father and survive this torture. Then it all started to happen in the spring of 1944. Two ghettos were set up in the town of Sighet, a large on in the center of town and a small one. Jews were no longer allowed to keep any kind of gold or jewels in their house. If the police found any kind of jewels in your house they would take it. Life seemed to go on as normal even though they were living in the ghettos. One night all of a sudden Elie found out that The Jews of his town were going to be deported. The life of Elie was going to be changed forever after this news. Before Elie was sent to the concentration camps he was a happy little boy living a normal life with his family. He studied the Jewish religion and had a lot of faith in God. After he was taken to Auschwitz he seemed to loose faith and he didn't even care if he died. He often questioned, " Where was his God now." His father too lost faith. When Elie arrived at Auschwitz he even saw his father cry for the first time. Elie had never seen his father cry before this. Elie also witnessed his father weaken and turn f
