What is Cool?

Neat, awesome, groovy, hip, killer, tight, sweet, nifty. All of these words are synonymous with the popular American cliche "cool." But really, what does this word mean? Or can it actually be defined because its meaning changes constantly throughout time? Surely a person's definition of the word cool in sixth grade is not the same as his or her's as a senior in high school. Even though the meaning is ever changing, there is a basic foundation for the definition of it. To be cool is to simply be appealing in some way and to make someone else think "wow" when he or she looks at whatever is under review.

Although this definition sounds extremely plain and uncomplicated, it is the truth. With it as the base then, different people modify it in different ways to fit their standards. For instance, many people think that their bedrooms are cool. However, there may not be anything too special in there, it is just that they feel comfortable and genuinely like their surroundings. Being comfortable is not the only thing that makes a place attractive though. A place that is cool usually has some sort of beauty or makes the person present feel happy in some way. Therefore, one person's interpretation of a place being cool, can be completely different then the next person's view.

pick that person last for his or her kickball team in gym class. However, four years later, that same person's definition of cool may be the person who gives then lunch money when he or she forgets. Or it is the person who goes to a party with him or her, so he or she does not feel stupid. So, as a person
