Theological Perspective of Divorce

From a theological perspective, what is your position regarding divorce?

For a Catholic, the preparation of marriage involves even more than understanding the laws of matrimony and applying for a marriage license. In the church, and in my opinion, marriage is more than a legal contract. It is also a scared covenant, an agreement or pact not only between the man and the woman but also between the couple and God (Adams). At weddings, couples join their right hands and exchange vows, or sacred promises binding them together. They give each other the gift of themselves, body and soul. They pledge a love that will be lasting, in the words of the traditional vows, "for better or worse, until death do us part." Accompanying these vows is the exchange of the rings. The ring, which is a circle, has no beginning or end, representing the newly married couple's love and fidelity for each other (Adams)."

Sometimes, however, the fairy tale comes to an end and the once "happily ever after" couple decides to go there separate ways. There are many reasons as to why a couple gets divorced, but I think that divorce often happens as a result of things that just build up over time. If a couple is really serious about marriage then from

"Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery (Luke 16:18)."

the beginning they should be willing to put forth every effort to make it work. I have witnessed the effects of an unhealthy marriage and have experienced the relief of divorce. My parents are from diverse denominations and both view divorce differently. For my father, it was a separation from something that made him unhappy, and for my mother (who is also Catholic) it was an opportunity for her to get herself and her children out of an unhealthy environment.

If the Church finds that a valid marriage did not occur due to a particular defect, then the person is free to marry again. However, in my opinion, they will certainly still have to face the emotional damage done by a broken "marriage".
