The Lost Battle
A detailed Summary of The Lost Battle
During all his books Ernest Hemingway showed protagonist that always were warriors, in spite that the majority of them were soldiers their fight was not in the war field, but their own life . The intention of these characters was to show, according Ernest Hemingway, what life meant to him.
As I mentioned before despite of the fact that Hemnigway's protagonists were in a war, his actual field of battle was themselves and with the help of the war their inner existence conflicts became stronger. For example, Nick Adams("The Battle"), who went to First World War, after he got hurt from a battle he declared in peace with the enemy. Despite of the fact that the War had not finish yet, the fight to get over of this traumatic experience had just begun. The facts that caussed him to take the decission of declaring in peace with his enemy were: a traumatic childhood, that it is his symbolic wound and the physical damage during the war
In "Big Two Hearted River" Nick Adams returned from the war and fought against his war memories in order not to become insane. Well, we see here that the battle for his existence continued after the War, and with the recollection of his childhood the battle became stronger than ever. After ha he

ad fought against these traumatic recollections in the story "A way you'll never be" he got insane.
Ernest Hemingway, as Nick Adams, had a traumatic childhood; about that Hemingway told that it was needed in order to be a good writer. Hemingway went to the First World War, not as a soldier but an ambulance driver; his knee got hurt the same as his character from "A Farewell to Arms", Frederic Henry, who besides of being hurt in the knee also fell in love with a nuse in Milan while he was recovering of his wound.
