Plot summary of Edgar Allan Poe's, "The Murders in the Rue Morgue."

In Poe's "Murders in the Rue Morgue," a mystery, that at first seems too complex to solve, is ultimately disentangled by a detective's reliance on analytical reasoning. The narrator, along with his friend, the protagonist, detective C. Auguste Dupin, become fascinated in a newspaper article about two gruesome murders. The victims, Madame L'Espanaya and her daughter Camille, were murdered in the middle of the night in their fourth floor apartment. Neighbors were awakened by loud shrieks coming from the women's residence. About ten neighbors, together with two policemen, forced their way into the building. By this time the screams had stopped, and two voices could be heard coming from the room. Their house had been ransacked; a bloody razor blade lay on a chair, long thick tresses of gray hair were found dabbled with blood, apparently pulled out from the roots, valuables were found str

The next day, with additional information printed in the paper, Dupin became more interested in the progress of the investigation. The seemingly insoluble mystery, and the police's lack of insight, becomes Dupin's main antagonists. Testimony provided by neighbors and acquaintances of the murdered women, asserted that the mother and daughter were respectable people and very affectionate towards each other. Witnesses that entered the apartment the night of the murders concurred that there were two voices heard arguing in the room, one of a gruff-voiced Frenchman and the other, a shrill-voiced foreigner. The witnesses could not, however, agree on the nationality of the foreigner. It was believed that the language spoken was Spanish, English, Russian, or Italian.
